Preppin Mama™ started the same way so many good things do—out of necessity at home.
What began as a mother and daughter trying to learn healthier, simpler, and more self-reliant ways of living slowly turned into something much bigger. We started learning how to preserve food, support local makers, cook from scratch, prepare our homes, and reconnect with the kinds of practical skills that used to be passed from generation to generation.
And somewhere along the way, we realized something important:
We weren’t the only ones searching for it.
What started as small pop-ups and community conversations grew into a storefront, classes, gatherings, and relationships with people who were all longing for the same thing—a slower, more connected way of life rooted in community, purpose, and practical knowledge.
That’s where National Homesteaders Day was born.
Not from perfection.
Not from having all the answers.
But from seeing a quiet revival already happening across this country.
People are gardening again.
Learning to sew again.
Cooking from scratch again.
Teaching their children again.
Gathering around tables again.
Trading knowledge again.
Little by little, people are reclaiming what was almost lost.
As this movement has grown, I began organizing many of these forgotten or overlooked skills into what I call The Seven Heritage Skills—believing that nearly every traditional life skill falls into one of these categories:
Grow — producing food and learning to work with the land
Preserve — protecting harvests and reducing waste
Make — creating useful things with our hands
Mend — repairing instead of replacing
Build — hands-on practical skills that create independence
Gather — coming together to share knowledge and community
Community — strengthening local relationships and supporting one another
These categories have become the framework behind the Lost Skills Revival and National Homesteaders Day.
And honestly? We’re still building this.
This movement is brand new. We are learning every day, and we hope over time to continue adding tutorials, guides, classes, resources, and stories that help more families reclaim practical knowledge one skill at a time.
At the heart of all of this is something very simple:
We believe strong homes build strong communities.
We believe practical knowledge matters.
We believe there is incredible value in slowing down, learning together, and helping one another.
Most of all, we believe this revival belongs to all of us.
Thank you for being here and walking this road alongside us.
